What Works in Student Retention: Community Colleges Report

This report highlight information on successful practices in community college student retention based on ACT’s national surveys that included more than 300 colleges.  According to the report the following practices were said to be making the greatest contribution to retention:

  • mandated placement of students in courses based on test scores;
  • tutoring;
  • remedial/developmental coursework (required);
  • comprehensive learning assistance center/lab;
  • academic advising center;
  • early warning system;
  • freshman seminar/university 101 (credit);
  • summer orientation; and
  • training for faculty academic advisors.
