LINKS 10 Successfully Held at Santa Ana College!

9/26/14 Santa Ana, CA — Today Santa Ana College hosted 3csn’s LINKS 10: Taking the Lead: Building Sustainable Professional Learning. Participants engaged in a day of reflection, dialog, and productive tasks to explore what good professional learning looks like and how to further professional development efforts on their home campus. Twenty-six educators representing 10 colleges throughout southern California were in attendance.

Some key themes emerged from the day’s discussion.

Participants discussed that professional learning should be:

  • valuable
  • meaningful
  • outcome-driven
  • rich in pedagogy
  • offer opportunities for application
  • in service of furthering a culture of learning
  • conducted in a friendly, inclusive environment

In sum, the day was filled with excitement, engagement, and a growing sense of community that when we learn together, we can serve students and one another that much better.

    Consensus coalesced around these key ideas about powerful professional learning experiences:
    1. They contextualize learning around the meaningful work we are doing;
    2. They build connections/community to foster trust for responsible risk-taking;
    3. They encourage self-reflection and meta-cognition;
    4. They provide the time for sustained learning;
    5. The leaders make their own learning visible; and
    6. They build ownership in participants.
